Mexico HOLIDAYS

To take a holiday in Mexico or a Mexico honeymoon you have to visit the Yucatan. The Yucatan Peninsula plays host to impressive Mayan ruins, beautiful Spanish colonial architecture and hundreds of miles of perfect, white-sand beaches with clear turquoise waters. Cenotes (large sinkholes) occasionally punctuate the limestone terrain, offering a beautiful glimpse of the vast system of underground rivers that runs through the region.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO IN Mexico

MAYAN WORLD

To see the great pyramids at Chichen Itza is a great experience, but some of the lesser known sites are just as good.  Uxmal for example is its equal, in our opinion anyway. The play of light at the end of the day is incredible.  There are also numerous smaller ruins worth visiting

HACIENDAS

When the Spanish conquistadors finally departed, they left behind some of the most incredible haciendas you will ever see. Some of them have been beautifully restored and converted into stunning hotels

BEACHES

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula probably has the best beaches in the isthmus. Once you head away from the circus that is Cancun you will find some world class hotels along pristine stretches of coastline all the way to Tulum

SNORKELLING

With the second longest barrier reef in the world situated just off its coast, you expect to find some excellent snorkelling and you would be right.  The reef is in excellent condition and is brimming with colourful corals and fish.

COLONIAL TOWNS

Merida is the main colonial town in the Yucatan and deserves at least 3 nights of your holiday.  It has the cobbled streets, colourful markets and beautiful old building you would expect, but at night the plazas are lined with live music and the restaurants spill onto the streets.

SELF DRIVE

Driving in Mexico is very simple. It has a good infrastructure and some excellent roads and as long as you keep to the speed limit the Mexican authorities will leave you alone!  Having your own vehicle though allows you discover some of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the area.

MAP OF Mexico

The itinerary and suggested visits were flawless. This is our second holiday with Latin Odyssey - speaks for itself, doesn't it?

AN OVERVIEW OF Mexico

For the best beaches in Central America the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula has hundreds of miles of wide beaches and inviting shallow turquoise waters.  The soft, powder sand is a brilliant white and the clarity of vision in the warm and clear Caribbean is superb.  The world’s second largest barrier reef runs parallel to the coast and offers superb diving and snorkelling excursions.

A great many ancient Mayan sites are dotted across the peninsula, reflecting the power and importance of a bygone age.  A visit to any of these temples is fascinating but three sites stand out for different reasons: Chichen Itza – whose size and grandeur never fails to impress, Uxmal – a master class in Mayan sculpture and design and Tulum whose steep temples ideally located on sea cliffs overlooking the Caribbean.

Distinctive and beautiful European architecture can be found here, particularly in the old city of Merida as well as the haciendas scattered across the land.  There are also curious sites such as Dzibilchaltun where a church was strategically planted in the heart of a Mayan temple complex.
