This Garifuna town, only accessible by boat, used to be a busy port but is now a sleepy backwater. Enjoy the Creole food and music. There is good trekking nearby through rain forest to a series of beautiful waterfalls.
Built on the banks of the Rio Dulce by the Spanish in the 16th century to protect the area from Caribbean pirates, it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt until it was abandoned in the late 18th century. You can combine a visit to the fort with your trip up the Rio Dulce
