Belize is literally teeming with wildlife. The numbers and varieties of bird is simply outstanding and even if you are not an ornithologist, you can’t fail to be impressed by the brightly coloured birds that pass by. You also have the opportunity to see jaguar and puma here, though be warned, they are reluctant to be photographed!
Chan Chich is located within the largest contiguous forest north of the Amazon basin. Conservation efforts to sustain and preserve the tri-national Maya Forest ("La Selva Maya") are underway with collaborative efforts undertaken in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. Gallon Jug Estate enjoys a fortunate location at the heart of La Selva Maya, buffered on all sides by forest and/or protected areas.
Orange Walk District in the northwest corner of Belize is the most remote and wild district of them all. The impressive Mayan ruins of Lamanai lie within a vast impenetrable jungle, accessible only by boat.
The flora, wildlife and birding in the Maya mountains are like no place on earth. The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve is home to various large mammals, including Puma, Jaguars, Ocelots, White-nosed Coatis, and Baird's Tapirs. Fantastic for birders too; native species of bird include the Eastern Bluebird, Stygian Owl, King Vulture, Blue-crowned Motmot and Red-lored Parrot.
