WILDLIFE IN BELIZE

Belize now has more national parks than Costa Rica and in their push for a protected country they have managed to save some of the most endangered areas of forest in Central America. This has led to an increase in numbers of both jaguar and Pumas as well as some of the smaller cats making this a wildlife destination like no other.
These larger mammals are a handsome addition to an already exotic location where Mayan ruins can be combined with a wildlife experience. Travelling by river passing Mennonite settlements and narrow creaks, you can’t help to be impressed. What Belize really specialises in, is birds, it is a place where the sheer variety and vibrant colours will outstand you.

Some of our guides have developed bird knowledge as a special interest, so much so that they literally name the page with each bird sighting It is wonderful and worthwhile to have someone to share your enthusiasm with and the habitats of Belize provide dream birdwatching locations, and a dauntingly long list of species that you simply have to travel to find.

BEST PLACES TO SEE WILDLIFE IN BELIZE

Belize is literally teeming with wildlife.  The numbers and varieties of bird is simply outstanding and even if you are not an ornithologist, you can’t fail to be impressed by the brightly coloured birds that pass by.  You also have the opportunity to see jaguar and puma here, though be warned, they are reluctant to be photographed!

Chan Chich

Chan Chich is located within the largest contiguous forest north of the Amazon basin. Conservation efforts to sustain and preserve the tri-national Maya Forest ("La Selva Maya") are underway with collaborative efforts undertaken in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. Gallon Jug Estate enjoys a fortunate location at the heart of La Selva Maya, buffered on all sides by forest and/or protected areas.

Lamanai

Orange Walk District in the northwest corner of Belize is the most remote and wild district of them all.  The impressive Mayan ruins of Lamanai lie within a vast impenetrable jungle, accessible only by boat.

Mountain Pine Ridge

The flora, wildlife and birding in the Maya mountains are like no place on earth. The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve is home to various large mammals, including Puma, Jaguars, Ocelots, White-nosed Coatis, and Baird's Tapirs. Fantastic for birders too; native species of bird include the Eastern Bluebird, Stygian Owl, King Vulture, Blue-crowned Motmot and Red-lored Parrot.
