The delight of this site is that it is only partly excavated and remains largely under the cover of jungle. Tall temples offer a great view of its jungle setting and the many hidden structures help you appreciate the size of this once important city, thought to have covered 70 sq km. It is a good bird and nature watching area with two large lakes.
The Tulum are is rated one of the best snorkelling and scuba diving locations in the world with miraculously colourful reefs and a spectacular variety of sea life.
Tulum was built in the 12th century and these were troubled times in the Mayan world as reflected by its defensive wall and watchtower, rare in other sites. Despite the beautiful sunrises from here, each doorway faces west and the site is dedicated to the worship of the Falling God or Setting Sun.
