Costa Rica is a natural paradise with dramatic jungle scenery, prolific wildlife and spectacular beaches. It has everything you need for an adventurous family holiday that will put a smile on everyone’s face. There are many great places to go but one of the most popular is Arenal and Monteverde in the north.
The volcano at Arenal has become one of Costa Rica’s most visited natural attractions. Over the years both international volcanologists and adrenalin seeking travellers have flocked to see Arenal. Most nights the perfectly conical crater offers a spectacle of lights with its explosive eruptions (although you have to cross your fingers for a clear evening). Your guides lead hikes into the rainforest close to the volcano base, or you can also drive yourself to the observation deck for a night viewing.
Arenal’s activities have also turned the area into a centre for outdoor adventure. In fact it serves up adventure activities any way you like it with its diverse landscape featuring rainforests teeming with life and sky high thundering waterfalls.
White-water rafting – the churning rapids of the Balsa and Toro Rivers deliver heart pumping white-water rafting.
Hiking and abseiling – in a narrow mountain canyon, hikers abseil down cliffs and waterfalls.
Zip lining – this is a really exciting way to see the rainforest and wildlife and is almost universally loved by our clients. There are dozens of zip lines winging their way through the jungle canopy. On some, you’ll move slowly along a nearly flat line from platform to platform as you look for toucans and howler monkeys. Other lines are much steeper and faster, making for an exhilarating pass over the rainforest below.
Hot springs – exhausted from these pursuits you can all soak your aching limbs in a series of steamy hot springs. There are many options to chose from, ranging from the luxurious, beautifully landscaped pools at Tabacón Hot Springs Luxury Resort, to the basic ones visited by the locals at Los Laureles.
