Pooks Hill
The Cayo District
The Cayo District
Pooks Hill was built around the small Mayan ruins of the same name and 9 of the 11 individual cabanas are built around the ruins with the remaining two being on stilts a small walk away. The rooms are rustic and simple and fit into the surroundings superbly.
Each has en-suite facilities and the two cabanas on stilts have small balconies whilst the remaining 9 are situated on the top of a small hill and have views across the jungle canopy. The food is excellent and is served buffet style in their restaurant whilst the upstairs bar is an excellent place to socialise with the other guests and discuss the day’s activities.
The small river which runs parallel to the lodge has some small rapids and the lodge provides tubes to float down the river in, which is an excellent activity. It is also situated close the Actun Tunichil Muknal caves, which is a highlight of the area. The caves are filled with ancient Mayan artefacts and the day is spent walking and swimming through the maze of waterways and walking amongst the stalagmite and stalactites within it.
This is an excellent lodge if you want a quiet retreat with immediate options for exploring the surrounding jungle.
