Butterfly House Bahia
Marau Peninsula
Marau Peninsula
Surrounding the lodge are freshwater lakes, World Heritage-listed rain-forests and local indigenous tribes, in fact the whole area is part of a protected conservation area, which means zero development, no high-rise buildings – just mile upon mile of untouched natural beauty.
Located 15 km from the nearest village (Barra Grande), Butterfly House benefits from being splendidly remote. From the moment you arrive, you are completely immersed in nature. Everything from the grass-thatched roofs down to the ethically-sourced bathroom products is designed with the environment in mind – and with virtually no carbon footprint, Butterfly House is a shining example of eco-luxury in South America.
There are strict measures in place to ensure the lodge doesn’t pollute the area. Organic waste is composted, non-organic matter is separated and treated before being sent for recycling and the resort’s sewer system is designed to produce eco-friendly bio fertiliser. But don’t worry, it’s not bucket showers. Plenty of hot water is provided by solar heating via a state-of-the-art ‘plate and boiler’ system. This truly is eco at work!
At the heart of Butterfly House lies its lively restaurant, Anna Banana. Part experimental kitchen, part Brazilian living room, it is very much the hub of the place. Guests can enjoy sharing platters of aromatic delicacies conjured by the lodge’s highly creative Brazilian chef, Elias Feitosa, or opt for an a la carte experience.
Feitosa has 18 years of experience in some of Brazil’s best-loved eateries, and his flair for fusing Brazilian flavours with French and Asian classics is second to none.
There are only 3 suites and 5 bungalows spread over their spacious grounds;
Almirante is the largest and most luxurious bungalow with over 56 sq m of tastefully decorated interior. The furnishings have been imported from Morocco and France. Two balconies are available to this bungalow, one of which is private and has an outside shower, both have beautiful views of the garden.
Coruja (meaning Owl in Portuguese) is on the second story of the Butterfly House and has a private balcony overlooking the pool and the gardens. A romantic energy emanates the room with an island queen size bed, an en-suite and a separate toilet and basin
Lua is upstairs in the Butterfly House and has two single beds and a private balcony overlooking the pool and gardens. The interior decorations are set in warm colours.
Aurora is a beautiful room with a queen size bed, private balcony and has a view you could only dream of. Warm furnishings with raw wood make this room one of our most popular suites and it is our personal favourite.
Agra Bungalow has two single beds, a balcony and bathroom. As with all of their bungalows it has been beautifully decorated with Morocan and French styles. Agra adjoins the Sara Bungalow and is perfect for families who want to stay together.
Atlas is set in the garden with views to the pool, it is decorated with a theme of greens and has beautiful wooden floors. Atlas has a queen size bed and an en-suite
Sara is a beautiful bungalow with warm tones, natural timbers and is another of our favourite rooms. Sara has a queen size bed, an en suite and a balcony shared with Agra. Sara and Agra can be booked together for families to enjoy together
Esmeralda is set deep in the garden and has a private feel, it has warm lighting, and is decorated with wood and marble furniture and French and Moroccan objects. Esmeralda has a queen size bed, en suite bathroom, its own balcony and has views over the garden and into the jungle.
ACTIVITIES
The Marau Peninsula with its sheltered bay and outlying cluster of islands simply begs to be explored by boat. Local beaches are magnificent and the surf is second to none. For water-babies, there are exotic coral reefs, deep natural pools and freshwater lakes to enjoy. On land, the jungle surrounding the lodge teems with exotic wildlife (marmosets, anteaters and armadillos are common sightings) and rare species of plants are in abundance. Dozens of nature trails start from the lodge and experts are on hand 24/7 to explain all there is to know about the region’s diverse flora and fauna. Should you wish to hire a guide, take a tour or try your hand at surfing, Butterfly House will be more than happy to arrange it – although you may be forced to discuss options over an ice-cold beer!
