On the road into Guatemala’s Toledo district, we saw several Menonnite’s on route to markets with their horse and cart laden down with bags of produce. The fact that they produce around 70% of Belize’s fresh produce is quite astounding. Its clear that we were moving into a poorer area of the country – the houses and the people were more ragged. However, this didn’t mean they didnt dress stylishly – the women wear beautiful embroidered dresses in royal purples, canary yellows and rich ruby reds. The main town in the district is Punta Gorda – and here is the main street where the market is held every day, early in the morning.. we saw several menonnites here too.
